Healthcare beyond hospitals, since 2002
Shree Sai Sanjivani Sanstha works to normalise the availability of basic healthcare for everyone in Nashik, including the people living in tribal areas and the urban slums.
The need
One level two hospital for 61 lakh people
Nashik is the fourth largest city in Maharashtra by population after Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. The Census of India recorded 14,86,053 people here in 2011, and the district around it has grown since.
Nashik Civil Hospital is the only facility in the district with level two care. It carries the patient load of 15 talukas on its own, roughly 61 lakh people, and close to half of them live in the tribal belt.
A handful of private hospitals do offer what the civil hospital cannot, from delivering premature babies to specialist surgery. Their fees are exorbitant, which puts them out of reach for most tribal families. So people wait, and a condition that was treatable stops being treatable.

About the organisation
Started in 2002, still turning up
The sanstha was established with one motive, to make basic healthcare a normal thing to have rather than a privilege, for everyone in Nashik including the people living in tribal areas and urban slums. We have worked in healthcare and in the education of tribal families without a break since then.
Our purpose is to create awareness about health and hygiene, to put basic medical facilities within reach of every household, and to run awareness programmes so families understand the government schemes and policies on medicine that they already qualify for.
We have never treated healthcare as a separate problem. Shree Sai Sanjivani Sanstha is active on the issues facing women and children in the financially weaker sections of Nashik, so alongside making treatment available we put equal weight on educating and creating awareness among these families, especially the women and children.
Many organisations and the Nashik Municipal Corporation are constantly adopting new methods to cope with the scale of this problem. The system we stay in constant touch with is the Zilla Parishad of Nashik district.

Message from the founder
Being at the forefront of the fight against corona, I saw human suffering like no other. Despite everything we did, we saw people dying every day. It made me realise how fragile life can be and how much I could still do to make life easier for the people around me.
Ever since the pandemic hit the country, doctors worked round the clock to save lives, and many committed doctors lost their own to the virus. In the beginning there was no clarity on how to treat it, so we fell back on experience and treated patients anyway. There was a time when doctors and hospital staff did not even have enough personal protective equipment, yet nobody stepped back from duty. We kept serving, for the larger good of society.
Understanding the risk police officers were carrying, Sai Sanjivani distributed masks and sanitisers to officers on duty. Needy and poor households of Nashik were given groceries and immunity boosters. In the middle of all this, tribal families still had no access to basic healthcare, so we organised free full body checkups and eye checkups in the tribal areas of Nashik. Through those activities we tried to address the immediate needs of our beneficiaries and ease the situation around them.
I would like to thank our team for standing by the mission of the organisation. It is because of their grit and determination that we were able to serve society through those years. The fight is not over. This is the time to unite and contribute to the betterment of society. Sai Sanjivani will keep working to make people's lives better, and I would request each one of you to come forward and do your bit.
